over supplementing in jackson's

chacoantegu Jul 26, 2003 12:17 AM

i have heard a lot of talk about over supplementing in jacksons chameleons especially vitamin A and i am just wondering how often should i dust a 3 month and 4 month old. I am currently feeding them gutloaded crickets and mealworms with carrots kale and lettuce and fruitflies. I am also gonna purchase some silk worms soon. I bought some minerall indoor formula and pretty much want to know how often i should supplement them.

If your primary concern is about vitamin A then you need not worry. The vegetables that you are gutloading with do not contain active or pre-formed vitamin A. It is only this form that is potentially toxic. Vegetables contain only carotene which is the non-toxic precursor of the vitamin. Carotene will be converted to vitamin A in your chameleons' system only as needed. Only animal based products contain the potentially toxic form of vitamin A. The only vitamin contained in Minerall I is vitamin D3 to assist with calcium absorbtion.
