05 Yellow Rat pic

nodaksnakelover Feb 02, 2006 02:30 PM

Here is a shot of my male 05 Yellow Rat. This last fall I bought a pile of ten baby yellow rats at a reduced price. I'm sure many saw that ad here on kingsnake! Anyhow, one died three weeks into the project. Another never did well. But the other eight ate well for me. I held back two males and a female, and sold the rest. Now I think I know which male I'm going to keep. This guy was several shades lighter than the other male. I was worried he'd be a light olive with yellow highlights, not the full yellow look that I want. But he's yellowing up rather nicely as of late. So think he's going to get the nod for my keeper male. Enjoy!

I have a much lighter 03 Yellow Rat (male). His sister has about the same coloring as your male. I too just love the way they look. I don't know why that are not more popular? Thanks for the photo. I will try to get a picture of my male posted soon.

Yeah,
I don't understand it either, but I guess there can only be so many favorites out there! But I love my pair. I had to basically give away the rest of the babies I didn't keep. Oh well! I think I'll just watch them grow and enjoy them. Not sure I plan to do a whole lot of breeding, since there doesn't seem to be a market for them. At least that was the impression I got at the show I attended plus seeing ads with them stick around forever... But yes, please do share pics of your two if you would! My female is much darker than my male, and currently in shed. The two males I have are brothers, and close in color to each other. I'm going to be selling the extra male this weekend to a friend.

I don't understand why they aren't more popular either. I love all of the american rats excluding the trans pecos and texas rat. I plan on getting a pair of yellows, everglades, greys, and bairds. Nothing as beautifull as what you can find in your back yard.

I agree. One may argue that some of the Asian snakes, such as the Beauty Snakes, Elaphe taeniura, are more striking at first glance, but here in North America, we are blessed with many handsome forms of snakes.

Just like in human fashion, many western women have a little black dress that they look stunning in; we have our Black Rats that I find handsome in their simplicity of coloring. We all know how stunning looking a Red Rat can be, and anyone who has viewed Draybar's photos has to be impressed with Bairds. We have been blessed here by natures cooking.

For those of you that don't know this, obsoletus means "dull." Does anyone here really think these handsome snakes are "dull"?

phiber_optikx Feb 04, 2006 02:45 PM

Unfortunately I do think that the yellow rats are dull. But I believe that is what makes them beautifull. Many people are attracted to the milks and kings because of the flashy colors. But unfortunately for them they will never know how beautifull our rats are in their own way. There is nothing like a snake that will crawl out of its hide and into your hand. And my rats really are interested in what I am doing. They watch me constantly and usually come to the front of the tank so they can see me better. The beauty of our rats is not just in how they look (which is also beautifull) but also in how they act.

..call me patriotic,i don't know...ok,let me 'fess up,i don't have any now-just various pines, kings, and milks-yet i get more of a kick out at finding corns in the wild over kings...ironic,huh...ok a couple old world elaphe that deserve 'honorable mention' are coxi and schrencki...wish i saw more of those,or could get my hands on some.anyone have pics of those?

jfirneno Feb 04, 2006 09:23 PM

Here's a few pics of some schrencki I work with. I'm partial to mandarins but I also work with new world rats (orange-phase texas rats and subocs). Actually there are very few ratsnakes that I don't like. But it's very hard to keep everything at once.

justinian2120 Feb 04, 2006 11:22 PM

..what's their temperment like?and what do the cb hatchlings go for?i love the adult coloration.....uh-oh,i'm starting to get ideas.....lol

jfirneno Feb 05, 2006 10:00 AM

Probably the most even-tempered of the ratsnakes (old or new world). The don't mind handling and the only time you would be careful is when you're feeding them. They seem genuinely curious about activity outside their cages. A very nice snake. They're cheap.

The yellow rat was one of the first rats I ever kept, along with a corn snake, but that was many years ago. I bought them in a pet shop for about $30/ea. and raised them up. I like all Pantherophis, but there's reasons I don't keep obsoletus anymore. I've been researching the Eurasian ratsnakes for a long time, but I'm getting back into American ratsnakes now. I've picked guttatus for my main species for lots of pretty obvious reasons, some of which are their smaller size, tremendous variety of colors and patterns, and popularity as a pet species. I think yellow rats are awesome, as are all the snakes in the Pantherophis complex, but I'm just too restricted for space and time. Maybe I'll pick up some larger rats after I retire and move to AZ.

There are some really great yellow and Everglades rats out there. If I was keeping them I'd be touting their beauty and natural grace, etc, myself. I think they're a terribly interesting snake.

Here's my Duval Co, Southwestern ratsnake, P. g. meahllmorum, again....TC

I think Yellow Rats are one of the best snkes there are they were the first species of snakes I kept as pets and were obviously good experinces as I am still keeping snakes to this very day (I have one yellow rat at this moment he was w/c 05 and hes doing great)...They kinda remind me of australian pythons...
