Kankakee Bull pic

nodaksnakelover Feb 02, 2006 02:35 PM

Had my digital camera out taking various shots. Pulled out this drawer, and took a fast shot before she started the usual darting the head around stuff she and her boyfriend are so good at. My camera doesn't take clear pictures of anything moving! So it turned out ok, so thought I'd share. Enjoy!

Your rack system looks very nice. What are you using for tubs? How about some more pics of your Kankakees. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Jeremy!
Those are boaphile racks, sweater boxes. And yes, a bit too small right now, but she's being moved up this weekend when my new rack arrives. Got one of the largest tubs they have from reptiletubs.com. They'll have plenty of space in those! And I really do try to get more pics of them, but trying to get good shots of my Kankakees is an attempt into pointlessness! They move around so darn much! But I'll try to take more in the future.

The Kankakee is my personal favorite locality of bull snakes. This is one of my breeder females. Sorry for the poor pics. These are all quickies I took while cleaning boxes.

Some little ones hatching out last year.

A yearling from the above female.

A two year old male.

And a two year old female.

I hope to update with better pics of my adults when I bring them up from winter cooling. Phil

Phil,
great pics! Thanks for sharing! Mine might be big enough this fall to go into hibernation. They turn two this year. We'll see how things go. Not sure I need another batch of baby snakes! But slave that I am, I'm sure I'll let things go!

beautiful n. locality bulls phil! i'm wondering, would you classify or consider them tri-colors or is that a whole different compartment? i have some 05's from jeff serrao that are hinting at looking like yours but i also have someb older kankakee's from bart bruno that are much, much blacker esp. thru the middle, so black in fact, they remind one of e. kings practically. what do you think?.....

Phil Peak Feb 06, 2006 08:08 PM

Dan,

Overall I would consider tricolor as a good description for these snakes as they tend to be darker on the anterior and posterior blotches (usually black as adults) and lighter in the mid section which are usually a chestnut brown. There is a fair amount of variation though from what I have observed. Some of these snakes tend towards a reddish brown on the middle blotches while others are more of a darker brown and I have seen a few that were black throughout. Jeff obtained some Kankakee's from me so most likely your snakes are from my bloodlines. I think you will be very pleased with those snakes as they mature. They are one of my favorites. Phil

jeff did describe his adults as being tri-colored and that's why i bought them from him though i have no idea where his founders came from......they do already show that 'reddish' middle your adults exhibit at the ripe old age of approx. 8 months but are far different looking than the ones i got from bart back in 01. his are just pretty much black throughout though i love both 'styles'. it's almost as if it's a different locality look within a given locality. 'very interesting' as that guy in Laugh In used to say. :>] thanks again phil for all your field work, i really like & appreciate the n. bulls!

Thanks for the kind words Dan. I am glad there is an interest in those snakes. To me, they are very special. Phil

Unfortunently this snake escaped in my large, old house back in September, - no sight of it yet. She was wonderfully beautifull and huge as a yearling. This is a pic of her at about 9-10 months old...
