?Pickerel Frog or leopard frog? (LONG)

jmf20 Jul 26, 2003 12:28 AM

well, i live in northeastern ohio, and recently received a small frog that is under an inch long. it may only be half an inch or so. and the main reason that i took him from the pet store is because he was small, bloated, and could barely swim (he resembled a ball with four stumps protruding from it). he probably would have drowned soon, because he had nothing to even brace himself on, and had never put his poor feet on dry land.

you can tell that he is a newly morphed frog but was far enough along that he needed to be removed from the water. the owner was happy to just hand him over with no charge, because they would have just killed him anyway (it's a completely aquatic store), and because they received him in a shipment of feeder ghost shrimp.

the second day of him being with me, you could actually tell that he is a frog, not a ball. i am happy with his progress, but i want to know what he is. he is too small for me to completely see his eardrum, or even tell if he has them.

i have a bullfrog which is close to being a year and a half old (they are NOT together) and i think i have a pretty good amount of knowledge when it comes to caring for him, but when it comes to my new addition, i am completely stumped. i have gotten him to eat a pretty good sized worm and a few maggots, but his mouth is soooo small, i don't know what else to get. pin head crickets are out of the question, because no one sells them around here, and i am not set up for breeding crickets, yet.

please, i hope someone can help me. he has the two yellowish (i think, because he is not in front of me, they might be a different color) dorsal lines down his back, and two small lines on either side of his face; one is yellowish, and one is black and points at his eyes. he also has the striped legs, and spotted back. but i can not tell if the spots are square, triangular, or circular in shape.

thank you and sorry in advance. (I can't post pics, yet)

give me until tomorrow afternoon and I'll post a picture of my leo froglets after they had morphed and you can compare. I'm not sure if mine were Northern or Southern but they are very close in looks. I will pop a photo up in the afternoon.

Glad to hear that you saved the frog's life. I can't believe they would have just let him drown...!
Both of those species are similar and require the same care. Half land and half water setup. When they are that small, almost any tiny insects that you can find are good food (i would stay way from ants.) I use tiny crickets that I find outside by turning over rocks. Just make sure they're from an area that is not sprayed with pesticides or lawn spray. If you got him to eat a worm, that's good, you could just stick to worms for a while until he is big enough for crickets. Not completely sure how safe maggots are.. I would just stay away from maggots because they freak me out

Wow, that's such a beautiful green to the left one!

Anyway, I have two Southern leos and they were pretty big when they morphed, so I doubt it's what he has (unless Northerns are significantly smaller) if it's mouth is so small... I've never had to give my leos a pinhead or even closely-sized cricket. What do you guys think?

I forgot to mention that in the photo I posted, that leo was about 1 1/2 inches. They were eating small crickets but not pinheads.

Sorry it took me so long to post!

Here's a picture from when my Leos had morphed. This one is about 2 weeks out of the water. Hope this helps!
