never basks

i have a smal young RES in a 20 gallon tank. water temp is around 83, i have a basking site set up for him made out of rock
its temp is around 85 but i have never seen him out of the water.
Ia there someting wrong with him?

This is normal behavior for a small turtle. Remember that
in the wild everything is a predator. They stay hid pretty
much to survive. Mine always basked when I wasn't around.
As soon as I would walk in they would dive into the water.
I have a hatchling painted turtle and he does the same thing.
My older turtles however are not even fazed by my presence
now.

Just give him a little privacy. Your temps are condusive
to basking so I am sure he is when you are not looking.

You should reduce your water temperature to around 72-75 degrees. Your water is virtually the same temperature as your basking area so he is not as likely to be inspired to get out and bask.

Agree with honuman. Lower the temp of the water.
