Bloods have the wierdest sheds...

hefte Feb 02, 2006 10:37 PM

I've kept snakes my whole life but got my first blood about nine months ago. I am amazed every time she sheds because she completely loses all pigment. Obviosly it's the outer layer of skin seperating that makes the underlying pigment hard to see, but I have never seen it to this degree. All my snakes dull before they shed, but my blood goes almost completely white. Wierdest thing I've ever seen. Do you think they have a thicker skin than other snakes, or do you think that the amount of moisture between the two layers is just that much greater. Love to hear what you guys think, thanks, Eric-

The milky color while they're in shed is from a fluid builing up beneath the old and new skin to ease in shedding. I've noticed this in my bloods too, the first time I saw it it scared me for a second cause the snake looked so horrible I thought she was dead or something. I'm not sure why is so much more noticeable in bloods, maybe it has something to do with being kept at a higher humidity. Mine don't get that like every shed, sometimes it will be much worse than other times. This is a picture of one of my blacks last time he was in shed. He's normally very very dark, and he actually looked worse in person than he does in this picture.

They must have a thick skin cos people keep calling them fat and they never take offence.
