RIP Mr. Pissypants

veiledbrian Feb 03, 2006 12:18 AM

I am taking him to the vet tomorrow to do a exam, my vet quoted me only 25 dollars and wanted to make sure that it was only that much by adding a note for the ladies at the desk to only charge me that. He was atleast 10 months old. And I have 2 other females and 98 incubating eggs. I took a short video of his symptoms if anyone is interested. Yes I noticed problems before. That is why I took him to the vet about a week or more ago and posted about that as well on here. No one could figure out what was wrong. He then made a miraculous recovery and was back to normal until yesterday. I had stopped feeding him his newly acquired silkworms to see if he improved. He did, and then I fed him one more the day before this happened. The thing is though that I have been feeding them to my females as well and they have had no side affects or illness. His setup was a 65 gal reptarium, soon to be a gigantic 5'x2.5'x2.5' homemade enclosure. I vit dust and gut load my crickets. I use Wild eye reptiles gut load. I use exo terra daylight bulbs, 150 wt. And reptisun 18". I have never had any issues with my set up. The only thing was my new ficus, which I posted about a week ago. I will hopefully find out tomorrow what the problem was.

Again I'm so sorry you lost this beauty, but glad you are going to find out the cause. It will not only help you to understand what happened, and help in caring for your chameleons, but may help many other people, who keep, or will keep them.

WOW on the 90 something eggs incubating, whewy... your gonna have your hands full ... and everthing else Hope all goes well.

Please let us know the outcome and cause when you find out, I think we are all wondering what happened.

a necropsy for $25? You have a very nice vet

I remember all your posts but the symptoms seemed to have been limited and sporadic. I'd be interested in your video. I'll email you. Were you dusting every day? Are the eggs his? At least you'll have his genes and maybe keep one

Of course I was dusting. I'm sorry but I am a bit offended by everyone making accusations about my husbandry. Obviously I dont know what was wrong with him or I would said soy vet even gave me compliments on my husbandry and said there was nothing wrong with him. And as far as my sporadic posting I'm not sure I understand... I was posting almost everyday with all the knowledge I had. Obviously it was not enough for anyone. If it had been doesn't anyone think I would have done something about it, if I understood what the problem was. There was something wrong with him. I'm trying to figure that out now. I am not some newbie who has no clue what he's doing. He didnt have mbd, he had good lights, he was supplemented enough, I gave hima varied diet. I'd like to wait and see what the exam shows before I begin looking at my husbandry, I would like for you all to do the same.

I don't think that all deaths are a part of husbandry. My vet has chameleons also, and she was telling me a while back, she had a 2 year old veiled that was acting weird, would fall off his branches, couldn't catch his food. I've seen the pictures of him, he was beautiful!! About 16 inches long total, his casque from jaw line to tip was almost 5 inches . She was confused because she had never had problems like that before, and had raised him since he was 2 months old. Blood work came back fine. X-rays were fine, no bone loss. Well one day he fell to the bottom of his cage, his legs and tail were stiff, sticking straight out. She took him in to the office and discovered he had a failed heart. It was three times the "normal" size which it was not on the x-rays from what she could tell, althought the x-rays were checking for bone loss, not organ problems. She guessed he either had a heart attack or a stroke. The symptoms had been around for almost a month, and the night before he passed he was fine even ate by himself. Sometimes those things just happen, to humans as well as animals. If you want piece of mind, get it done. It never hurts to know. I asked her send me an email with his pic. and her story. I'll post it when I get it.

Brian,

I didn't mean to upset you We are all confused. I have been following your posts since the beginning and that is why I am baffled as well. The reason I asked about dusitng was concern for too often, not too little. I know you have had chams for a while and care deeply (and well) for them. Hopefully the vet will have some answers.

Posting on forums, much like email (and that's with friends), can easily be misconstrued, especially during an emotional time. No one is accusing you of anything; we are only trying help figure things out. But I think it was too soon for all of that. We all mean well and can be a support during this time. It always sucks to lose a cham and many of us can empathize with you.

I got the video. It is quite strange - as if he simply had no control over his limbs. I hope others take a look to see if anyone has encountered this before.

No need to reply, get a good night's sleep and let us know what the vet said once you are up to it.
