Advice needed on my new additions

sP1v Jul 26, 2003 01:12 AM

I have had a male crested gecko (Sméagol) for about 4 months now (he is 7 months old), I went to the NY reptile Expo last weekend to try and buy a mate for him.

I ended up buying a female crested, 3 baby cresteds and 2 Tokays! I'm $200 down but I'm in gecko heaven!

The female that I bought is about 4 months old, so she is a bit smaller than Sméagol, I put her in his tank as soon as I got back and within a few hours he started biting her.  I left them to it because I know gecks can get a bit rough when they try to mate, but after a while he gave her several chomps and she cried out in pain. So I moved to her to another small 10 gallon tank.  Is this normal?   I think that I should keep them separate until she is older, but i would like some good advice. The guy at the expo who sold her to me promised me that she was female, but is it possible that she is not and thus the rough treatment?

Also I am keeping all three babies (they are about 4 weeks old)in a small 5 gallon container at the moment, how long will they be safe together (assuming that I will have more than 1 male). Once they get bigger in size i will move them to a bigger tank, but after my experience with my other 2 I am worried about them fighting / losing their tails.

Stephen,
Way to young to be placing geckos together to breed, they should at least be 12-14 months before you attempt it. This way the female is def old enough to produce eggs and the stress on her body will be lower. Of course she also has to have good weight, around 50 – 60 grams. There is the small possibility she is a male to, they can sometimes be late bloomers. The guy should not have promised you, just that you have a good chance. So anyway yeah, raise them separate until they are old enough and you can place them back together for breeding. Once she lays her first clutch you can separate them until next season, cresteds can retain sperm and she will continue to lay through the season. Or you can leave them together year round (make sure they have enough room). I favor the other way as it’s more controlled.

As for the babies I suggest raising them each in their own cages. There is no competition from siblings over food, so you won’t have to worry about a quicker gecko eating everything before the others. Also allow you to keep track of what every bodies food intake is. Best of Luck with your new additions.
