Inland Taipans

AustHerps Feb 03, 2006 06:33 AM

Picked these little beauties up today

Oxyuranus microlepidotus

One is eating thawed voluntarily, the other (hopefully) just needs a few more days to settle in.

Nice looking snakes...Whats the temperment like on those?
Aren't they supposed to be pretty nasty?

killingjoker Feb 04, 2006 01:54 AM

I have heard they are pretty laid back, and docile. I guess if you packed the kind of punch they do, you dont have to act too nasty about things.

beautiful snakes tho. Wow...

LarryF Feb 04, 2006 01:52 AM

Now you're just being cruel!!

AustHerps Feb 04, 2006 02:32 AM

Aaaahahahaha,

Well it will please you to know then that my spending has stopped! I have no more money lol, and what little I have is going towards heating the enclosures I built today.

Yes they do indeed pack quite a punch. Some are laid back (to the stage that they can be freehandled (ps no i wouldn't dare!)), and some are like the devil reincarnated.

These two are very laid back, and don't get defensive even when they see movement - they seem more inquisitive than aggressive.

The browns I got the other day are, however, extremely aggressive, and strike the second they see movement.

Cheers,
Aaron.

Where did you find such beautiful snakes? I understand Inlands are hard to find and come with outrageous price tags. Gorgeous specimens nonetheless.

LarryF Feb 06, 2006 11:37 PM

Please don't answer that, I don't want to know! (He lives in Australia. He probably paid a few hundred bucks for them, the *#&$(*#!)

AustHerps Feb 07, 2006 01:39 AM

They're from a very reputable breeder
And yes, they were around the price mentioned earlier (well, a tad more lol). They generally sell for about $300-$400 each.

Cheers, and thanks for the kind comments all,
Aaron.

AustHerps Feb 07, 2006 03:31 AM

Hey mate...

Just to give you an idea of the cost of our herps... www.reptilesdownunder.com/ahc

I understand you guys can get green tree pythons for around the $500 mark for hatchies? Here, they sell for around $8000.

Cheers,
Aaron.

I'm not listening! (Sticks fingers in ears.)

That sounds about right. Overpriced at $500 in my opinion, but I guess it depends on what you like.

The thing is, the Inland is the Holy Grail for hot keepers. They're apparently not even endangered or particularly hard to find, but they are pure unobtainium anywhere outside Oz. Your posts reminded me of the only time I've ever seen them offered for sale here so I went back and looked up the discussion:

The asking price was $12000USD for a pair.
The consensus (after I had stopped following the thread) was that the guy offering them almost certainly didn't have any and couldn't get any.
The two people who reported having them at their serpentariums said Austrailia was using the Chinese Panda model: Two years worth of jumping through hoops to get a pair and if they reproduced, the offspring were the property of the zoo that sent them. None were to be sold to private keepers under any circumstances...

You suck!

>>...only time I've ever seen them offered for sale here...

An extranious "here" crept into the sentence above. It was not on this board.

taphillip Feb 08, 2006 10:52 AM

Out of curiosity Larry, what other instution claims to have them? I'd not heard that but would love to know if it's true...
Best Regards,

On closer examination, I see that you are using a differnt handle on the other forum and have not filled in your profile... (It was obvious once I looked at your email address though. Oops.)

taphillip Feb 08, 2006 07:23 PM

not sure if that was directed at me or not, Larry? If it were and you are talking about VR.org and here, everyone knows who I am on either site.? So not sure what your point is... It's not some conspiracy theory if you are that suspicious?
Two sites, registered at different times. same email address...hmmm
The VR.org name is directed at all the bites that occured the year I signed up on that site...stopgettinpopped...get it, if you need spaces I'll help you "stop gettin' popped"

Doesn't alter the question....Do you know of another serpentarium with O. microlepidotus? Or are you mistaked again?
Thanks and best to you.

>>not sure if that was directed at me or not, Larry?

Ok, I guess that wasn't as clear as it could have been. I did not mean to imply anything other than that I was being unobservant. I know you don't make a secret of who you are. You usually sign your posts on VR and I usually don't bother looking at the user name in that case. In the discussion in question, you did not sign them and when I clicked on the user name I saw an empty profile, didn't notice the email address and assumed it must be someone I wasn't familiar with. (I will be just slightly annoying at this point and point out that that's why the board provides profiles and why every new poster gets ragged on for not filling them in.)

>>Doesn't alter the question....Do you know of another serpentarium with O. microlepidotus? Or are you mistaked again?

No. I thought you were two people. That no longer appears to be the case.

taphillip Feb 09, 2006 11:54 AM

No worries, you just got my hopes up that there were more bloodlines in the states. That would have been nice to see.
Apologize for the snippiness, just rubbed me wrong at the moment.
Best Regards,
