shedding question

jjohnson1 Feb 03, 2006 09:31 AM

As I have previously stated I am a new gecko owner with not previous reptile experience. My Fredda has not been well cared for in the past and I am trying my best to make up for that. I have had her approx. 2.5 wks. She was in the final stages of a shed when I got her and began shedding again this past weekend. The problem is she never completed her first shed. Her tail was almost completely still covered. Do I need to help her? What do I need to do? SHe has a moist hide, that she does not seem to like though. It is new. I do not think she has had one in the past. Thanks!!

Hi there,
I'm still fairly new to the gecko world as well, but I have done quite extensive reading up on the care for my little one. I can make a few suggestions....
If your leo hasn't fully shed, I may recommend giving her a "bath". Take a tupperware container and fill it with luke-warm water, just enough to cover her feet. If her tail can soak a bit, that may help continue the shed. Another way to help her would be to use a wet cotton swab to gently brush away the remains. I'm not sure how much may actually be left on your leo...? but maybe one of these methods could help.
As for her humid hide, what are you using? Also, what is the temperature of the substrate in your tank? If you could provide a bit of info about your setup, that may be helpful for some others on this forum as some can provide more advice.
By the way, it's wonderful that you've decided to care for a previously neglected gecko! Good luck...keep us posted!

She is in a 10gal tank. There is indoor/outdoor carpet in the bottom. The temp. stays around 85ish on the heated end. I have damp peat moss in the humid hide. I believe that she is basicially starving herself. She has only eaten 3-4 worms in the past 2 wks or so. Those are what she has always been fed.

you should raise the temp to 86-90 degrees.
