Brownsville, Texas February 3rd. Sunny and mild...

Riobravoreptiles Feb 03, 2006 12:12 PM

.. too mild! If we don't get some cold weather and (most importantly) some rain soon I don't know what will happen.. we'll just blow away, I suppose.
.
Here's some quick pics from this morning on the north side of town. First, an adult ratsnake...
.

.
.. a closer look, very typical for the area..
.

.
This is interesting, Coluber c. oaxacus and M. t. ruthveni from under the same piece of cardboard..
.

.
Beautiful snakes! .. the Ruthven's whipsnake will not look quite so similar to the racer when it is larger. FYI. though all the books say-so, I have yet to see a Oaxacan racer in a bush or in a tree.. always under surface debris or laying out on the ground.
.
Have fun, be safe.

Gus,

That's a really nice looking ruthveni. You rarely see photos of those animals due their restricted range in the US. Thanks for posting.

Nice pics. Gus! Thanks for sharing. Colder and breezy here in Corpus, no snakes seen from Ganado to Corpus today, but yesterday the gators and turtles were sunning themselves at Aransas wildlife refuge, and only saw a neo ribbon snake under cover, and a glass lizard on Mustang Island. Here's a cousin to your ruthveni from last year.
