When I first read your subject line I thought mites. If you haven't had a problem with mites before, and haven't introduced any new animals recently, I'd think it's unlikely that your snake has mites. Close observation of your snake will allow you to see the mites if they're there though.
Another idea that came to mind is that since you mentioned that your python has just shed, perhaps it has not removed all of the skin on the head. If you still have the shed skin, look at the head and make sure "everything is there." Maybe one of the eyecaps is still on an eye. I would think though that barring either one of these possibilities your snake will probably be back to normal behavior before long. I hope this might have helped.

Aside from issues of mites or adhered shed, your animal might have had fluid discharge through its nostrils and/or mouth which is irritating it and which it is trying to wipe away. This, of course, could indicate anything from a respiratory infection to it just having had a big drink from its water bowl.
