snakes and pregnancy

brett5958 Feb 03, 2006 03:58 PM

My wife helps me clean the snake cages and likes to handle them in general. We just found out that she is expecting. Are there any concerns or problems that any of you know about? Thanks

I was told just to be careful - wash up afterwards, etc. there is always the risk of salmonella with reptiles and unfortunately when pregnant you seem to be more susceptible to everything - luckily it was also a perfect way to get hubby to clean out the cat box for 9 months. LOL.

BTW Congratulations!!!

Hey,

As a father of 3 and ball python owner/breeder, I would say keep her AWAY!!!!! My wife scaled back working with the animals during her second pregnancy and somehow (may have been bad chicken at KFC) still got salmonella. She was so dehydrated she had to be admitted to the hospital. We could have lost the baby! Just watching the woman you love go through that discomfort and pain for 2 weeks was bad enough. No snake is worth that.

Anyway, I'm watching the IMAX shark movie and some cartoons now with that sweet little boy, and he is the greatest blessing ever! At 3, he's already a wonderful helper in the snake room!

May God bless,
