Island nibblers

invisiblemarker Feb 03, 2006 06:25 PM

I have a continuous problem with my RES chewing up my floating islands. They keep dirtying up the bottem of the tank with little island bits, not to mention ruining the island. It's looking like I'm going to have to replace this lastest one, they chewed it away from the guide so it is free floating. I feed every other day and I always have a large cuttle bone floating around in there, which is sometimes but less often chewed on as well. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on detering this behavior or if I am just doomed to a life of nervious chewers.

I'm just taking an educated guess here but I would think there still hungry. I don't know what turtles you have or age, but this is a RES diet. When they are younger they are more carnivorous, steadily getting herbivorous. Feed them feeder fish, since there low in fat and cost like 10 cents for one. Even better they don't usually care if they over give you some and still cost the same as what you asked for! Do not get goldfish because they are high in fat. You can try to feed them romaine lettuce but mine aren't eating it. You could also try apples, but mine are eating the tank plants. Sorry can't remember name. It can get a little messy though, just get a fish net and scoop them off the top of the water. Usually baby RES like floating things to nibble on, but they forget about the plant leaves once they start to float. They always eat pellets. Make sure to give them ones with calcium and D3. Gammarus pellets have them, but I have heard that reptomin doesn't. If they still don't stop you can put a peice of driftwood in there. Make sure that it goes from one side of the tank to the other; in other words, make sure the sides aren't showing. You can have all of it above water, or what I have seen done alot, is have a driftwood that curves in the middle and have that above water with the sides in the water. Whatever you do, make sure they can easily get up there to bask. Since I'm guessing there babies, it should be especially easy since they are discovering things, the obvious may not be so obvious. Hope this helped.
