Found a DOR right before the border patrol in 1999

I caught about a 40 inch bucksin male blairs between the Border patrol checkpoint and the blinking light back in 1998. It was laying straight out on the shoulder of the road and had just come out of a large culvert. This is approximately 1/4 mile from the checkpoint.

would that be north of the check point??

Yes, that would be North of the checkpoint.

could that be considered a 277 with 377 influence???.....i'm toying with the idea of staying south of the check point this year............

I think you would have some luck. A few decent cuts from south of the checkpoint.

Here is a question...
Would you let Border Patrol know before hand what you are doing as to not cause suspicion? I doubt anyone would go back and forth through the checkpoint. That is just asking to cause an issue.

Good luck if you decide to do that. I know for certain that lepidus, milks and bairds have all been taken back from south of the checkpoint. I always thought it would be neat to get an alterna on that road that leads to the Amistad Park.

Take Care,

Steven

I've heard of several alterna from Rough Canyon, and one of my Dad's cousins used to live out there and said they had a kingsnake in their garage once.

NEGATIVE!! I would consider this a 277 animal and nothing else. I do not waste my time on 377. In fact, I do not believe I have even seen a rattler on that road. As far as hunting the cuts South of the checkpoint, the only snakes I have ever seen between there and the lake are longnose, bulls, Subocs and rattlesnakes. I am sure alterna are there, but I would much rather concentrate my time North of the checkpoint all the way into Sutton County for alterna. Don't waste your time South!! This is a picture of the snake from that location I mentioned before.

wayne, you're hunting the wrong stretches of 377 . . . there are some good cuts, but they aren't really close to 277 . . . I've found several bairdi and a pictigaster there, mostly in transit from my place to 277. I intend to put in some serious time there this June.

Rock on Troy. You can have it. I am usually just passing through to get to 277 via 377 anyway, however, that's a rarity. I still think it's a waste of my time. I am glad someone enjoys that road. I have seen the cuts on the road, and I don't doubt alterna as well as others are found there (sometimes) but I am more into seeing things in good numbers vs. hunting for many nights without seeing nothin. See you out West this Spring/Summer.

"seeing things in numbers"? my advice, then, would be to stay off of 277! Unless the things you want to see in numbers are trucks, cars, etc. When I want to see things in numbers, I head west, west, west!

One nice thing about 377 is the lack of traffic . . . And since I have my 2.2 nice 277s, I figure I'll spend a good bit of time, especially on weekends, hunting 377 (May/June) in the interests of finding alterna further east than anyone else.
