How many females can a male mate and produce?

danpython Feb 03, 2006 11:48 PM

I am new to the biz, and I have a male 900g blonde pastel that has locked up with 3 females over the past 45 days. He has locked up twice with his first two girls and once with his last. A friend of mine, who has been in the biz over 10 years, told me that a male ball can fertilize 2-3 females a season. He may lock up with more but he would be shooting blanks with those extra girls. I have seen on this site where some say their male bred 6-7 girls this year but never say if they produced fertilized eggs with all 6-7.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gary

Good point. I have put males in with as many as 5 females. But with that, I have only had at most, 3 of them produce clutches. I now put one male with just 3 females in a season.

Now, some males are great breeders and would breed a ceramic tea kettle if you put it in the cage. Others are more "shy". I have one male who would take the tea kettle and run while the rest of my males are shy and want to date for a while, get to know the female's parents, etc.

LOL, have you tried offering him the tea kettle? :D

I have a pastel male in with 4 females this year and he has locked up with all 4 at least 3 times each. What we will get for eggs is another story, his girls are 1825g, 1760g, 2200g and 1300g, ages respectively are 18 months, 18 months, 2 1/2 yrs and 4 yrs. The 2 1/2 yr old 2200g girl was 2000g last year and paired up but never went, she also stopped eating last breeding season and dropped to 1600g by the end of the season. Hopefully this year she will go, she hasn't stopped eating, she takes a small rat every week still. So I'm hoping the 18 month girls will go but who knows since they are young, the 4 yr old hopefully will go to but since she is only 1300g I'm not really holding my breath on her either. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

My pastel male Midas produced nine clutches last year. Every one of the sixty plus eggs was fertile. His son takes after him!
