Making a filter

joeysgreen Feb 04, 2006 07:55 AM

Hey guys, I am trying to better the crappy filtration I have at the moment (currently having to rely on very frequent water changes). So I have two questions.

1)What type of commercial filter do you recommend? Is the pet store or fish store the best place to buy it, or is there a cheaper alternative?

2)Has anyone been successfull creating their own filter systems?

I have an approx. 100gallon pond with 1.1 sliders, a ~50 gallon with a small snapper, and am possibly adding another enclosure with a soft-shell.

Thanks for any imput

Ian

That filter is awesome... completely amazing. A lot more than I can manage myself. Definately the way to go with a permenant set up

Filters are not very difficult to make. I would need to see some pics of your setup before I could give you viable options.

Hi Ian,

I currently have a homemade gravity fed external filter on the 300 gallon stock tank I use for the bulk of my RES population. It curently houses about 1.4 RES which range in size from 6" - 10" and about 30 various sizes of feeder goldfish/koi. Seems to keep the water crystal clear, though I have never tested water quality. I usually will break the filter once a year for general cleaning. Beyond that it seems to be working well. For my smaller ponds (60 gallon/110 gallon) I use a commercial in pond filter system from PetCo/PetSmart.

The heart of my filter is a 900 gph pump which will turnover the pond 3 times in an hour.

The biggest issue I have is with a gravity fed system is balancing the input versus output on the pump.

I'd be happy to discuss details if your interested. It is not beyond the average do it yourselfer.
