Another Supplement Question...

ymerejsregor Feb 04, 2006 10:27 AM

I don't know if there is a right or wrong answer to this questions since I have seen so many cantradictory suggestions. Just thought I would get some opinions.

A lot of the documentation says something to the effect of "give supplement with a meal once a week", however the dosing information on the supplement (Herpevite) is based on the mass of the meal. Instructions say that it should be 1 tsp (I believe...don't have it in front of me) per 1 pound of food. Since Bruce eats about an ounce of food a day, I have been putting approx. 1/16th of a tsp on his meal daily. Is it just me, or doesn't this make more sense per the label directions?

i just sprinkle it on once a week. i have never paid attention to the ratio, just made it look like the salad was sprinkled with tiny feta cheese or something but usually food with supplements on it gets ignored around here.

however if you want the ratio to be correct, and please correct me if i am wrong i am not really a math person, wouldn't you need to put 2/16 because there are 16 ounces to a lb, 7 days in a week, so that is seven ounces, which is almost half a pound and 14/16 would be almost a tsp for the week?

Actually, the time or days in a week would be irrelevant in the calculation. It would simply be based on the consumption of 1 pound of food regardless of time.

Thanks for the compliments on the picture. I've already been threatened by my wife that if I don't take as many pictures of our kids when we have them as I have the lizrd, there will be big trouble!

We don't claim expertise here. All we can say is what works for us. We've used Uromastyx Dust & Jurassivite daily to supplement the regular greens & such. These products seem more tasty than MinerAll, HerpVite, etc.

Thanks for the compliments on the pics! I'm kind of a camera nut since the advent of digital (i.e. no more film cost). There are several more at http://rogerscomputersvps.com/bruce

Bruce will be glad to know he has an admirer! I'll pass it along. Yes, those are some serious nose boogies. I scraped them off shortly thereafter and he really hasn't had them since. Not sure why he had them so bad for about a week, but they seemed to go away.

As far as how I got the picture. Luck, pure luck and nothing more.

My lizards have always done well as far as supplementation is concerned, and here is what I do:

Mali Uromastyx and Bearded Dragon get calcium on monday, wednesday, and friday (just sprinkled liberally over their salads), and they get multivitamins usually on mondays and fridays, but not much, since you really only need to do that once a week.

Leopard Gecko gets his crickets dusted with calcium and multivitamins every feeding (which is usually two or three times a week). This is mostly because the powder usually falls off of the crickets pretty quickly, so really he only gets about half of them covered in supplements (the ones that he's able to snag right when I drop them in).

Russian Tortoise is still a baby and needs lots of calcium, so I sprinkle his food with calcium daily (sometimes I'll skip a day out of the week), and multivitamins on monday and friday. He also has a cuttlebone to chew on (which he ignores), and sometimes we'll crush up eggshells and sprinkle them around on the ground in his enclosure, which he loves, and they're good for him.

Ball Python....I just got him today and he's pretty self-explanatory. A mouse/rat is a self-contained balanced diet.
