Wish us lots of luck - Bad news on Spot

kendergirl Feb 04, 2006 03:15 PM

Well, the Amikacin failed to complete get rid of the RI. He was doing a lot better by the last shot (last Saturday), but he was still yawning a lot. Now, he's right back to where he was before treatment. He's really doing bad, and I don't know that he'll survive the next few days before I can get him in to see the regular vet. She was made aware of the problems on Wednesday, but didn't want to do anything further until she saw him again. Now it might be too late. It seems like he's given up as he doesn't spend any time on the warm side anymore. I've done everything I can, the only thing left to do is hope and prey.

I've contacted every local exotic vet in the area (and a few that aren't), and they've ALL given me one of four responces...
1. They are closed, or are closing soon.
2. The DR is out of town.
3. They work with exotics, but not snakes.
4. They work with snakes, but all appointments are full.

NOT ONE Vet, emergency or otherwise, will see him before Wednesday. Apparently "serious respritory infection" isn't serious enough for anyone to try to help me. This really, really sucks.

daaaaaaaaaaarn I hope all works out maybe request a regimin of Baytril instead of amakacin as this has always seemed to work for my situations that may have arose in the RI field.

I wish spot the best of luck... I've got my fingers crossed that he pulls through to wednesday.

It makes me mad that nobody can fit you in. Sure, it doesn't make sense to see an animal if you don't know how to treat it, but my exotic vet always manages to fit me in...

The vet I've been going to isn't open on weekends, so I'm really hoping that come Monday I can get him in to see her. At the very least, get some medication and see the vet at a later date. After all, she (the vet) already knows what's going on with him.

Just out of curiosity, what day and night temps are you keeping Spot at?

For the last 2 - 3 weeks he's been at 83/95 all day and night. His humidity has been very stable at 50 - 65%...the majority of the time it's between 55% and 60%.

Are these ambient temps? I would not go lower than 85 degrees in the cool end, 24 X 7. And that's ambient temp.

I agree with Jay...I have never used Meds. to treat an RI. I raise the Temp to the 90's and after several weeks the RI goes away...now I have never had a major blow up with bubles and all of that...just the wheezing and stuff. All the snakes I have treated this way are still doing fine years after the RI...no reoccurences...able to breed with out any health issues.

It's rare that one of my BPs gets RI. But when I bred boas, they would sometimes get RI. I use the heat treatment with no meds and all have successfully recovered. Last year, I got a new ball in that had RI - with bubbles and all. I increased her heat 24 X 7 to 85 degrees for the cool and 95 for the warm (ambient temps). She averaged heat in the 88-90 range and recovered quickly.

in my experience you want to keep the entire cage very warm, no cool end. the only experience i've had with RI was last year right before the daytona show with one of my het pied girls. I kept her entire cage in the 92-94 degree range and humidity right around 70%. she was also on oral baytril daily. it was a slow recovery but she is now 100% and chow'ing down rats with no sign that she was ever sick. It's important that their temps are high enough to metabolize the meds you are giving her. If she is able to get down to low-mid 80's her body isn't using all the meds you give her. This is just my experience and what I was told by my vet and a few other large breeders.

I have a Ball that picked up an RI from the stress of shipping and after two weeks the Baytril wasn't working then my Vet. referred me to a different Vet. and sent me home with Piperacillin once daily for 14 days and everything cleared up.
She is currently a feeding machine. Hope this helps.
Mike Derks
P.S. Definitely keep the temps. up
