How much growth in second year?

spiny-rhiny Feb 04, 2006 07:12 PM

Ok, it's been a little slow around here and I have a question, so why not... Our rhino was VERY small when we got her last year as a hatchling (7-8"stl) and has since been growing in leaps and bounds (now 24"stl). I'd like to know what to expect for the next year to come, and how large the average two year old rhino is. Our yearling is currently in a 2 1/2'x3'x4' long cage, and we expect to have to upgrade her in the next 6 months to one year. Any input is helpful.

He was purchased from Bob Ehrig and had the fastest growth rate of any Rhino that I've raised. By 30 months of age he was 38 inches STL and weighed over 8 pounds. His growth has slowed to a more normal pace now.

Hmmm I was wondering the same thing. I was going to post basically the same question too. I'm new to posting here, but you know me from the other forum. Our rhinos are siblings! Hi "Jiffypop", I recognize you too! haha. What would the average growth by the second year be? I know the one you showed you said had the most dramatic growth spurt.

I think we both thank her for her post, but both want some more "normal" accounts of 2 year olds. Anyone else?

Besides that, is this other poster someone I know? Where's the pic of the sibling?! Are they the same year or is yours a hatchling?

Maybe Loofah's growth WAS "normal". I'm sure there is a wide range of what is considered normal growth. If you take a look at the link that I've included (to a previous post on this forum) it shows an almost 2 year old Rhino that grew at a similar rate as Loofah. I've also raised Rhinos that were barely 24 inches STL at 2 years of age. I did not consider these runts and, perhaps, shouldn't have thought of Loofah as a "monster".
An iguana's rate of growth is dependent on many things, including genetics. I've never raised a Rhino from Ron so I have no experience with his animals. It's very possible, however, that Loofah and Diego could be loosely related. I'd love to see someone with some time on their hands do an informal study on this.

Diego at almost 2 years

Hi, I am that "other poster" with the monster rhino.

According to my records here she was 9.5" svl and 26" overall at one year. At 18 mo she was 35" long. I dont have a svl for her at that point. She did weigh 1.8 kg at 18 months tho.

Right this second she is 16" svl and about 40" overall at 2 years 4 months old. By right now I mean, like 2 secs ago. I dont have a current weight. I will wait til after she poops before trying to handle her. As much as she doesnt mind being approached she does NOT enjoy being picked up.

I will take some pics today if you would like.

Carole

PS for size compare that is a 24" tube light and an 8" reflector above her in this photo.

Ha Ha! I recognize that "hide" which isn't really much of a hide anymore now, it is?! Our girl has one in her cage too...she loves it so much we didn't want to take it out, but did have to weight it down with a larger one over the top...she kept still trying to squeeze inside and then she'd stand up and flip it over scaring herself. I don't think she realizes how big she is, ha ha ha.

What a beautiful monster you have there, and thanks for the info!
