Not a Boa, but it strikes just as fast!

This is my other Hobby. This is my 1977, Smokey and the Bandit Trans-Am. This is what the " Bandit " should have been. Built to run the Silver State Classic Road Race in Nevada at speeds of more than 200 mph! You name it, and this thing has it; " 461 stroker big block, 1000 horse power rated Maddog 700R4 overdrive and a whole lot more. " Hard for me to choose at times, what I love more, " Boas or total adrenaline and Horse Power. " Thanks, for looking......Johnson Herp

to the track. I could definately take it with some slicks, but I did not build it for that. It was built for Road Racing. It is 750 horse on the motor and should warrant it around 9 in the quarter. Slap a direct port 300 shot of N.O.S. or better and you would definately have a monster on the quarter. I prefer to build naturally aspirated engines though. To me it is much more impressive to build power than to force power.......Johnson Herp

I had a 76 firebird, not a trans am. Favorite car I've had, and the only one worth more when I traded it in than it cost new. (inflation was high those days). Mark

of course matching number cars are worth more than Rods, as long as you do not wreck them, they are money in the bank..........Johnson Herp

Time to build that Ls1 into a 427 beast. I tell you, those Ls1 engines are one of the best technologies, that they have come out with. The cylinder walls are sleeved like a Diesel and they are able to get 427 cubit inches out of them. Very impressive motors and you can build alot of power with them. I am old school though and love the thundering sound of old muscle........Johnson Herp

It's a 2004, 40th aniversery edition Mach1, competition orange with black.. Shaker hood, 4.6 liter, DOHC-32valve 320hp... 1029 of these made in 04

The pics look redish but it's actually bright orange.. It's been raining, these were the best I could do...

Nice, I am a G.M. man, but I love the old Mustangs, especially the 68 Shelby. No, problem with Ford, but I do wish, that they would sart building their engines more aggresively and get away from the Superchargers.Put that one in the garage, in 40 years " who knows? ".......Johnson Herp

There's nothing like a muscle car on a nice sunny day. Seems that most of the kids today are going for civics and slapping on one of those large diameter noisy exhausts to add an extra 3 hp to the 100 they already have. Back when I was a kid, camaros and firebirds were the cars to have. I guess they just became too expensive for kids and not practical for guys who are now around 40. This, in turn, led to low sales and the discontinuation of those "classics". Doesn't matter how old you are or how old a muscle car is - they'll always be cool. I had a '76 firebird, an '88 formula, and I now have a 2000 Ram Air (WS6) Trans Am. No minivans for me! Long live The Bandit!

My older brother still has his original '69 Camaro with a 350 CI, 300 HP engine. I just ordered an '06 GT convertiple Mustang with every upgrade possible. The 4.6 liter engine works out to be only 281 CI but still throws 300 HP on 87 octane unleaded. I'm not sure how today's horsepower ratings compare with those back in the old muscle car days but the technology has certainly come a long way with better suspensions, electronic ignition, etc.
While I'll always love the cars I grew up with as a teenager there are still some road burners out there and the Mustangs retro look works for me. I love the new concept Challenger and hope it becomes available.

PanamaRed Feb 05, 2006 11:58 AM

Real close on the HP.. The new muscle cars are rating about the same or a little better than most of the best monster motors of back in the day, but they get better gas mileage as if that were really a factor...LOL...

I like them all I used to be all GM myself Olds cutlass, buick's, (gotta love a wedge motor) Camero's, and Chevy 4x4's, then I got into the mustangs.. This is the 4th one we have had I love them. I had an 95 (the last year of the 5.0), 97, 02, GT's and now this 04 mach 1..

With the exception of the Mustangs, there are no other muscle cars being made which is what I meant when I said they don't make 'em like they used to. Actually, the last Trans Am's that were build had faster quarter mile times than any other Pontiac to date including the '69 GTO. The Mustangs are the last of a dying breed since I don't consider the vet a muscle car. It's a shame.

PanamaRed Feb 05, 2006 12:30 PM

Dodge is making a retro challenger with a hemi, and Chevy is making a retro camero.. I'm not a big fan of the retro thing, thats why we got an 04 and not a new stang, but at least they are going to make them..

Should be interresting to see what they look like. My bet is that the camero will be smaller and have a "rounder" look. I also bet that it loses that mean muscle car look. Hopefully, these new cars won't suffer the same fate as the new GTO - yuck!

vcaruso15 Feb 06, 2006 11:34 AM

The 08 Dodge Challanger will have a 425hp hemi!!!! and you cant beat a 4cyl Subaru WRX STI with 300hp (wow are they fun to drive) The future is looking bright for muscle no matter if you are new or old school.

RON745 Feb 06, 2006 05:49 PM

I'm with you on the Dodge if it ever happens but I wouldn't consider a Subaru a muscle car even if it is quick (and it is). Not only does a muscle car have to have raw power but it also has to have a certain "bad ***" look to it which takes the Subaru out of it. No matter how fast it is, it's still a Subaru. I'm not trying to come down on anyone here, I just have an image of what the term "muscle car" calls to mind. It has to be fast, it has to look mean, it has to sound mean - something only a V8 can do well, and it has to have a certain presence. It shouldn't look like a match-box car. I hope you're right. I hope they bring back something that meets this description. As of right now, only the Mustang comes close. Peace...

That's great that so many herpers share the hotrod pastime.

I am also a fan of the big block. Unfortunetly my own cars don't match up to what you guys got but my family's religion does revolve around my dad's race team. We have a 500hp superstock for the clay oval in my hometown. The "green man-a-leashy" is a rickety old '70 1-tonne duly with a redone 440. It'll beat most cars off the line whether it's pulling the racecar or not
