My new male A. capra

Herptiles_net Feb 04, 2006 07:51 PM

I bought my new male A. capra from a pet store on the 25th, "Ridley" is in quarantine at my college's clinic. You can see in the pic below that he's quite skinny (54g!), but he's bright, alert and active.

And oh boy, what a male:

He'll get nice and plump and healthy before being introduced to my female, Tiamat, and hopefully within the next year or so they'll be mating.

Right now he's got a panoply of parasites. Capillaria and/or trichurids as well as ascarids (all intestinal parasitic worms). Luckily, since they're all nematodes, fenbendazole (Panacur) will take care of all of them.

Unfortunately, he seems to be a mealworms junkie, so far. Going to try some silkworms soon, and hopefully I'll find some earthworms, but he absolutely refuses crickets!

Nice specimen.
But definitely not too skinny. He has exactly the weight he should have.
Do not try to make him obese.

Ingo,

I know these are naturally slender lizards, but his femurs, humeri, ribs and pelvis are very visible through his skin (not very apparent from the photos). I'd expect almost any lizard that went through shipping across the world to be crammed into a small tank with four other males to be a little thin.

I agree with Ingo, He doesn't look thin to me either. I look at the back legs for my indication. The ribs usually do show on MHDs. I would push hydration more than fatening up. Moisture can do a lot to fill them out too. Once the parasites are gone and you find the earth worms you will see a big difference too.

I think he looks great!
