Preliminary Reptile Egg Data

Sighthunter Feb 05, 2006 09:39 AM

Preliminary data is showing that a healthy snake egg is almost exactly 1/3 calcium and two thirds membrane. A chicken egg by comparison is about 98% calcium and 2% membrane. Preliminary findings is that neutral to slightly acid substrate works best. Albumen will fail at the extremes but can tolerate acid more so than alkali. These findings are preliminary but looks like we are on to something.

What does this imply for use of vermiculite and tap water for incubating indigo eggs?

If what you do works do not fix it! Tap water is variable most tap water is around 7 somewhat neurtral. I have sampled last years hatch medium and I obtained perfect results at 6.2 I have not yet sampled vermiculite or pearlite but they are cooked rocks most likley neutral.I have never hatched Dry eggs I work with mostly Spilotes and other Central and South American oddballs so until I get some baseline data do not change your program! I feel that the amount of calcium on the eggs is a huge variable.
