Help! Sick starving gecko

raine Feb 05, 2006 09:47 AM

My 6 year old leo, Eddie, hasn't eaten in several days, won't let me force feed meal worms, hasn't pooped except for diarrhea yesterday. Her eyes are black like she's blind. She had been having trouble shedding for a while. She also now lays in her water dish all the time. Temps are 80-85 but I have played around with it to see if her behavior changes. It doesn't. What might be easier to feed her through an eye dropper?
Anyone have any clues? Thanks in advance for your help.

well if you have runny stool then you need to go to a vet .he or she could have parasites .try to get a sample to your vet of the stool.if shes going bling she could be scared of the mealworms and crickets.

Parasites was my guess as to the runny stool also. You say six year old. Have you owned her all her life? If not, was she an adult when you got her? Thinkin' old age here, but it may not be the case. THere is a product called jump start which, unfortunately, I know little about. It's used to help non eaters start eating again. It supplies them with the necessary nutrients to keep them healthy until they begin to feed on their own again. Anyone else know anything about this feel free to jump in here. I would take her to the vets though.

First of all, I agree, with the onset of diarrhea a Vet visit is in order. She's not going to die from not eating for a few days, so don't get overly worried about that at this point. An adult Leo of a healthy weight can easily go a month without eating and not be in fear of immediate death. So, I'm not sure I'd try force feeding just yet as that can be pretty stressful to her. But you do need to figure out what's going on. It's great you are seeking help so quickly.

We could definately use some more information. How long have you had her? What substrate do you have her on? How do you measure the temps on the warmside of the enclosure? The temps on the warmside should be between 88-93 degrees measured on the top of the substrate. You say she's been have problems shedding, does she have a humid hide? Does she have unshed skin stuck to her anywhere? What do you feed her and about how much and how often? Is she housed with any other Leos? Answering these questions might give us some insight as to what may be going on. But please do get her to a Vet since diarrhea and laying in a water dish can be signs of parasites which can only be treated by a Vet.
