OMG I'm so excited!

ReptilesRampant Feb 05, 2006 07:26 PM

Okay, I put my female cornsnake in the male's cage yesterday, but he was being a shy boy and wouldn't come out of his hide. (It's one of those hollow branches that are impossible to get your snake out of if they don't want to come out) I took her out last night to see if he would come out of his hide. He did and I removed the hide this morning. I put the female back in this afternoon, and the male got all excited. He did the chin rubs and got on top of her while she was racing around the cage. After about five minutes, he got her settled down and they hooked up!!! They stayed like that for an hour. I am so excited! This is my first time breeding snakes and their first time too, and they weren't even brumated. I was just wondering about a few things...

1. How long should I leave them together?

2. I have another female lined up for him, can he service more than one female on his first year? (He's 3.5 years old)

3. If he can do two females, how long should I wait to put the second one in his cage?

LOL. Congrats.
I love the way you worded your questions. I am far from an expert, but I would think a week with each snake and somekind of rest in between. Like maybe a week. I don't think there is any problem with a male "servicing" two females, but he will need a rest. Good luck

1. How long should I leave them together?
You can remove the male after they release from each other.

2. I have another female lined up for him, can he service more than one female on his first year? (He's 3.5 years old)
He should be able too but it being his first year you may want his next breeding to be with the next female instead of the one he already bred.

3. If he can do two females, how long should I wait to put the second one in his cage?
" We've found that allowing males a minimal three-day rest period before being called for stud service again seems adequate to give them time to build up enough sperm for further fertile breedings." (The cornsnake manual pg. 47 paragraph 3)

Very nice looking fellow!
When I first started my collection, I had one male and two females. My boyfriend named him Lucky, just for that reason. LOL

I for one, being a first time breeder myself would like updates as things progress. Email me if you'd rather not post, and we can compare notes.
