Clear boxes for a rack...

zach_whitman Feb 05, 2006 07:45 PM

I am thinking about building a rack for some large kings and hundurans. I was originally going to build a cage with about 7 shelves (roughly 34x18in each) and a plexi glass door that hinged down from each cage. I like to be able to see my snakes well and I couldn't find any clear boxes for a rack that were the size I wanted. The other day I found a restaurant supply place that has 18x26x6 inch crystal clear polycarbonate drawers. This is still pushing the minimum size for me personaly so I was wondering if anyone knew of a source for clear boxes that were any larger then this? A rack would just be so much less time consuming to build

Those Cambro polycarbonate boxes are as good as it gets, unfortunately.

If you find a box you like you can route out a section and glue in an acrylic or polycarbonate window.

If you go this route I suggest finding a taller box. Six inch tall boxes won't allow for good viewing no matter how clear they are.

8" tall is a minimum, IMHO.

You could also build a series of cages from storage totes like in this picture.

I can't find this box anymore but it would work great for the species you keep. The floor area is about 29" x 23" if you turn them horizontally.

Just to give you another idea of what I'm talking about, here is a side and front view of the above idea. This was one of my prototype cages.

Sorry for the messy condition of the cage in this picture:

Might be tough to find the right box for a large king/honduran, but I'm sure they're out there.

These cages are not as easy to build as a rack, but they are easier than a typical cage. And A LOT cheaper and lighter as well. Really works well and I could kick myself for not thinking of it years earlier. If I could find the right box it would be the only style of caging I use.

I really like Chris Storage tote design and am currently tring to adapt it to my needs.

But if you want a rack with large tubs you will have sacrifice the clarity for size. Reptiletubs.com sells clear tubs that come in a variety of sizes unfortunatly they are not that clear but they do sell large tubs.

My 2 Cents
