Guess the rat

snakesunlimited1 Feb 05, 2006 10:47 PM

I was taking some pics while I was cleaning and this one came out kind of funny. Before you look at the next pic guess what kind this rat snake is. It might be obvious to some of you guys but it was just kind weird for me to have to double check when I looked at the pic.

This snake just has a ton of orange and not much else on the front of its body but it is a bairds. I need to get a full body shot and see if any of you might of a idea where it came from. I got it as a adoption with no info. Here is a side shot up close that was neat.

That's the funny part I got myself. I cropped the pics and then had to double check the originals to see what snake I had. Here is a more complete look at the snake. Hopefully someone has a idea of the area of where this type is found.

This is Panterophis bairdi, Texas population. More orange in coloration - simple aberration, nothing more

I have a pair from the northwestern part of the range that have that solid everglades look to the anterior part of the body when adults. I don't know if it is restricted to that area, but that snake looks a lot like my male.

Thanks Chris. I know it doesn't mean much but at least I can look in a general area for a mate if I choose to go for orange bairds. Nice snakes.

Jason,
these things are so dang variable, its hard to say.
The most colorful ones I have seen are from Bandera Cty., or thereabouts.
However, I've seen ones from 277 North of Del Rio that are every bit as colorful, and I saw an all-orange one in Garner State Park, TX.
Its a crap-shoot with these guys, and honestly, I can't imagine knowing a locale on these based on color.

Thanks for the info. I would love to see pics of any if you have any. These guys are kinda new to me so all the pics I get to see are helpful. I am loving the CB pair of 05's I have. They have a great feed response and are very calm. The snake in this post however tends to be flighty and musk every time I handle her. I am guessing she is a WC because of how she reacts to being handled.

Do any of you guys have a CB that is flighty?? I am just curious about the general temperament of these guys across the board. I know there is lots of variance in all snakes but when CB what is your experience??

I have a female that looks almost like yours.

snakesunlimited1 Feb 09, 2006 05:35 PM

No. No you don't have one like mine... yours is way better looking. Very cool snake. Any info on where it came from???
