quick question about incubators........

joshhutto Feb 05, 2006 11:12 PM

ok incubator is all finished except one detail, the shelves. I will be using 12 inch closet racks (12 inch wide) that will go from side to side. The only problem is that I'm not sure what size tubs to use for egg boxes. First thought was 12 qt's but looking at them they are huge in my midsize fridge incubator only being able to get 2 per shelf and probably only 3 rows, 4 if i squeeze the boxes in tight. What kind of tubs does everyone use for their eggs, I was thinking maybe the 6 qt's could possibly be used if i go with the no substrate method. If there are other choices out there let me know, i'm about 3 weeks from eggs, lol. I know I'm the worst procrastinator there is.

I never had this problem with my large python eggs, i had to use 28 qts as egg boxes or let mom do the job.

Here are a few shots of what i had going last season.
Those are 19 quart rubbermaids(got'em at wally).

This is what i am going to try to get away with this year.

12 quart rubbermaids..same sized lid as the 19 quart(Like the one on the bottom in pic below).

..and a couple of these too..they are 5.4 quart Iris tubs.

I over did it with the perlite layer thickness last season...but i think i still need to add more to the level i have setup this year(otherwise, they may sink under the weight).

Which will be cutting it close(to the inside lid height)with those Iris 5.4q.

good luck

I use the mens shoe boxes from The Container Store, along with the "no substrate" method. They are not as big as the 15qt. You can also get two clutches of eggs per box if needed.
