chlorechis substrate

texanherp Feb 06, 2006 12:34 PM

I have recently purchaced a pair of atheris chlorechis and i have them in small rubber maid containers with plastic coated hangers running through it. I have a mix of reptibark and coconut fiber for the substrate. I was told that the fiber alone would mold if kept moist. I have heard that chlorechis were very suseptalbe to mouth rott by minimal contact with this coconut fiber. If anyone has a better substrate to use let me know.

I've always kept my Atheris on paper, paper towels or cypress mulch and have not had problems. I think mold is an issue only when there is inadequate ventilation. As long as the cage has good circulation of air, mold shouldn't be a major issue.

I don't think that your coconut fiber mix would be bad for the snake alone. Mixed in with too much moisture and poor ventilation, it could obviously help contribute to the problem. You would want to reduce the chances of accidental ingestion of the substrate but I don't know that I see a problem really... Maybe others can enlighten us???
