king snake in same room........

wisema2297 Feb 06, 2006 12:49 PM

I just adpoted a striped cali king and currently have him housed (securely) in the same room as my corns. Has anyone ever noticed wether or not this would cause stress in the corns assuming they could smell the king. 2 of my corns or in shed phase so are hiding anyway. Just wondering since kings would eat corns in the wild.

I think the problem would be in the king not the corns. He may always be in feeding response since he can smell them. It also may stress him out. Keep an eye on him. He should be just fine though.

I currently don’t have any kings in my collection but I have maintained Cal Kings. I would say as long as its secure there shouldn’t be a problem but keep an eye on it as was already said. All my herps are in the same room “My Snake Room” I have Boas, Corns, Gophers, Leopard Geckos, Anoles, Sharp-tail Snakes. I have not seen a problem with anyone of them caring that the others are there. Not to say it doesn’t stress them but I just haven’t seen any signs of stress yet.

Same here, but I did notice that my bigger lizards are very interested when they can see each other, or anything else that moves. I put dividers (paper or sceenery backing) up, so they can't now. I don't seem to have a problem with anyone just on smell each other. I have a communal "pet room" also.

Kings will eat what ever they can that is smaller than them. i can vouch for the king eating corn. When I first started this hobby, I went to a reptile show and got a ghost corn and what I was told was a blizzard/snow corn. I thought the snow looking different then the corns I had normally seen, but the guy told me it was a corn when I asked. When I got them home, being a noobie, I put them together, as they were small. The next day I was short a ghost, and descovered I had an albino king. I was peeved. Anyway, the morals of the story are make sure you know what kind of snake you have, don't house things together, yes kings eat corns.
I have all my reptiles in the same room. I even have a baby king in the same display case as my corns. I generally do not house them right next to each other, though. Because when I did, I noticed the king trying to get in the other cage, through the glass, and "smelling" the air a little more than normal.
I have not noticed any change in behavior on the part of my corns.

I keep a Kingsnake in a viv right next to all my Corns - never noticed any reaction to him. He's been there for years and all seem quite happy with the arrangement.

Where I volunteer has kings and gopher snakes in cages in close proximity. The animals are healthy, and one of their gopher snakes has been there for seventeen years and is still going strong. As long as the housing is secure, I doubt it would be detrimental.
