A feeding question

jasonw Feb 06, 2006 02:08 PM

I had my corns on a schedule of 2 proper size mice every 10 days, this was apparently sufficient but I wanted to fatten them up a little more so I changed it to 3 mice every 10 days. I recently had problems with my breeders and they stopped producing as much as they use to so I moved them back to 2 mice. I don’t mind buying mice as I have had to do that the past month since my mice produced nothing. I was just wandering, 1. I think I will get as many answers on this as there are members to this board, everyone kind of has a different opinion on something that has worked for them and that’s but can we all agree on a feeding schedule that will keep a snake healthy and happy? I think my 2 mice every 10 days may just be a little to little. One reason I think this is because according to my snakes age and reading around here I believe they are way to small “Both in length and diameter” than they should be at this age. Both of them are approaching a year old and I would be lucky if they were 18-24” in length. Thanks for the help.

A side note. My gophers and boas are on the same feeding schedule and they do not show this stunted growth "For lack of a better term" Maybe I just worry to much. Also in my first post a left out a word. What I ment to say is everyone has an oppinion that works for them and thats fine, there is nothign wrong with that. Thanks agan.

Everything I've read says "one proper-sized food item every 7-10 days". You're statement that 2 during this same period is too little really floors me.

I feed my young ones 1 every 4 days. I know people will critizice this but it works for me and they grow fast. My adults only get 1 very 7-10 days.Ive never had a problem with regurge or sheds to this point and I have 24 corns now.

What's the big rush to have them "grow fast"? They should grow steadily and naturally. You shouldn't hurry it. I've seen this same sentiment from other people on this forum, and I don't get it. It doesn't get them to sexual maturity quicker, does it?

I dont understand the point of only feeding every 2 weeks. Why starve a snake if they are not hungry they dont eat,if they are i feed them. Its all a matter of preference. Doesnt make you wrong and it doesnt make me wrong.

No you are not starving them. You may want to concider feeding them once every 7 days though....

Be careful with overfeeding. You could end up with an obese snake. I purchased an adult sunglow not too long ago who looked like a gravid female, but was a male. It is unhealthy. Do a little more research. I agree that everyone has their own way, but just because the snakes are not regurging, doesn't always mean it works. I am no expert, by far. I think the three in that set frame of time is too much. I feed mine about every 5 days.
I am sure, like was posted before, everyone will have their own opinion!

Like I said, when they reach close to adulthood, I back off to every 7-10 days. I have none that are obese!

Easy there. I was not saying you would have obese snakes. You feed the same as me, it sounds like. I just made the general comment that if you overfeed, you could get obese snakes. Not meaning you as in you specifically, you as in everyone.

Its no problem....we all have our "opinions" about different things. I work closely with someone with years and years of experience on snakes and this is just the method ive accepted.
Like my earlier reply to walt it doesnt make any of us wrong.

You can never feed a hatchling too much (don't take that literally)At this stage of their lives they are constantly growing and burning energy. Take into concideration that all snakes grow at a certain rate. So feeding them more doesn't really mean they will grow faster. They can only grow so fast. I feed 1 appropriatly sized mouse/pinky Monday and Friday and sometimes skip a feeding to keep them on their "toes." None of my snakes are obese or even fat (accept my bp who is supposed to be a heavy bodied snake) I actually think peaches and chunk look a little slender. It doesn't matter how fast they grow just as long as they are growing.

Yes, I agree. Some of mine skip feedings as well. Sometimes, they dont take 1 once in a while and i dont force the issue, they will eat when they are ready. And yes i have a few babies that were hatched in aug and they are 25 inches already and some same age are half that size.

I also feed my snakes every 5 days or so... especially if they're out and about in their cages "hunting". If they aren't looking around, then I sometimes wait an extra day or two... I don't want to waste any food! LOL.

So one food item every 7 days is the agreement then? or - if any signs of abnormal weight loss or gain are observed.
