Dumerils Monitor

redtaildaddy Feb 06, 2006 02:29 PM

Ok, so nile monitors are now illegal in Ny, and I found a reptile breeder near me with dumeril monitors for $150, after searching on the interent I found this is not a bad price since there will be no shipping. Can anyone tell me about their expierences with dumerils? Id also like to know how large they grow, ive seen anywhere from 3-5 feet, a 2 foot difference may not seem like much but we all know it is, I AM looking for a large lizard so the size wont dissaude me. Id also like to see some pix of ADULTS if anyone can find them and an average wieght for an adult, Ty

Dumeril's are so much fun to work with. They are very active and can be fed a variety of prey items: crawfish, whole-body shrimp, crab, roaches, and the occasional mouse. They spend a lot of time soaking and defecating in their water (which is convenient for easy clean-up). Humidity is key with these guys, but generally they are relatively easy to care for as long as you can provide a large enclosure for an adult and high humidity.

The Dumeril's I am working with vary in size, but all run about 3-4 ft TL. The largest adult male weighs about 2.27 kg (5 lbs) and the females are about 1.36 kg to 1.81 kg (3-4 lbs.) The length of the largest male is about 3.5 ft TL and one of the adult females is about 3.2 ft TL. (Do not have a solid length on all of them yet.)

For $150 you should expect to receive a wild caught Dumeril's. It be in your best interest to check out the captive bred Dumeril's because they are available. That is if you are looking for a healthy monitor.

Hope that helps, good luck!

This is the place that I was talking about before, when I was looking for a new Savannah I stopped in here, I know he had a few different types of monitors and he said that he breed some of them so I am not sure but it is an idea, shop around till you find the monitor that you want.

Angelo (owner/operator of reptile showcase) is a good guy, but I would be careful what you buy there. Due to the lack of funds and space, animals that he has to keep around tend to decline in health. As far as I know, the animals he breeds are usually kept in good condition, as are the hatchlings, but one man cannot keep track of all of the reptiles as they start to grow older and new batches of hatchlings start coming in. As a general rule, his snakes are usually kept in better condition than the lizards, tortoises, etc, do to their nature (they survive well in smaller spaces with significantly less husbandry).

For example, I bought a bearded dragon there years ago who was almost a full adult. At the time, I should have realized he wasn't in good condition, but I bought him anyways and found that he had tons of parasites. It got so bad at one point that he became anoerexic, and I've been struggling with him ever since. It was definately a bad call on my part. However, I am considering buying a baby ball python from him, because they are in spectacular condition (newly hatched, just started feeding).

I have only been there once and it was packed like he was moving. So I do not know if that is how it usually looks(I was not impressed). There is another place called "the reptile guy in henrietta, I am going to stop over there soon, hopefully" tomorrow. I just like looking at different animals and weeing what people have. I do not plan on extending our reptile collection any time soon.

the best place in rochester is captive life forms or life forms or whatever on w.henrietta rd. the guy is a complete jerk but he knows his stuff, and his animals are in remarkable condition, as is the store, prices are good and a huge selection.
