european green toad

thefroglady08 Feb 06, 2006 03:46 PM

hey yall. yesterday I bought a european green toad. I've had toads before, so I'm not completely new at caring for them. Anyway, the guy at the pet store said to feed it 5 crickets a day. It's not a very big toad, so my question is, will it really need that many a day? Also, what kind of heating will it need? I still have to find some stuff to add to his terrarrium for hiding places, so does anyone have ideas? Right now, he's in there with some sort of soil type stuff my cousin had for her iguana that is safe for toads, but thats all. I've learned so far he does burrow, so that probably means I'm going to need a good bit of the soil stuff, correct? I'll appreciate any help, I googled care sheets, but none of them answered my questions.....

www.pollywog.co.uk has good care information on Bufo viridis. When I've kept them, I fed them 5 crix every other day w/ whatever safe WC insects I could collect for snacks. They're voracious eaters.
As far as heating, the pair I had actually seemed to love the lower temps. I alternated keeping them in my house and out on the balcony, and I'd see them quite active @ night w/ temps in the low to mid 50's. Room temps in the 70's during the day should be fine. LOL!

Info and caresheets on green toads is very thin on the web. I would thing they would be very similar to american toads. Here's a general purpose sheet from petco.

Notice at the bottom it says "do not house different species of amphibians together" Petco is one of the biggest offenders of doing just that.
