candling panther eggs

dan-binderup Feb 06, 2006 04:59 PM

Hi
I just candled my panther eggs, I have two clutch's cooking as we speak. the first one is from late august and the second one is laid about two months later. when I candled the first clutch the eggs glow red, the clutch laid two month later glows yellow.
is this normal? I have heard that eggs glow red when out of the dispause, is this right?
hope to get some good answers.

best regards
Dan Binderup

Hello,

You're mostly correct; eggs that are going through a diapause period will appear uniformly yellow, whereas eggs that are going through vascularization appear red (red blood vessels should be visible).

Here's a photo of an egg in diapause (F. lateralis) in its sixth month of incubation.

This one is going through vascularization (F. pardalis)

I hope this helps.
