Question about snake suddenly striking...

Bammer Jul 26, 2003 10:29 AM

well... I have lots of snakes, some that strike, some that dont. I get used to thier personalities usually. I have a boa constrictor, and a year ago she had a high feeding response.. so when i opened the cage she would suddenly strike at me. Well, its been a year.. and no food items were even in the snake room when she she struck at me.

I was getting up, about to go to work. Then I was turning on her light and leaning close to the side of her 55 gallon aquarium... I was walking away when i heard a "thump" and saw her recoil in the S position... so maybe i scared her?

I am afraid she might have hurt her mouth while trying to strike...

So, defensive? I am not sure.. she has been moody lately. I guess I will have to take more caution with her. I dont want to get bit by a big, female boa constrictor.

The pic is of her... shes pretty, isnt she?

I dont recomend ever feeding your snake within the cage it lives. I use to have a burmease Python and I made this mistake and when one of those things bite they leave scares for life. I take all my snakes out of the cage and feed them in a cardboard box. The rumor is that if you feed them in the cage they will associat the cage opening with feeding time. My Python was the most docile snake I ever owned untill this happend

its not uncommon for them to do this.........mine dose it occassionaly.....somtimes their just starteld...on the other side if the only time you go into her tank is to feed then that could be the cause...why not put a timer on the light so you dont have to go into the tank to switch it on.

Just out of curiosity can you post a pic of the set up? if its all glass and quite bare it may be too open for the snake to feel secure putting it on edge every time someone goes near…you said it had a feeding spurt ….this could mean a growth spurt too making it even harder for the snake to hide away …….if this is the case try a larger enclosure with plenty of room to climb and hide….wooden glass fronted viv’s tend to be better (in my opinion ) as they can be made quite inexpensively ,and you can have it the way you want it .remember to give it some height and some branches as in the wild they will take birds and bats ect out of the air and its really cool to see it feeding in mid air….here’s a few pics of one of mine doing so .(she is approximately 5 years old and in a 8ft long x 3ft wide x 4ft 6” high viv).
