Hello everyone. I'm new to kingsnake.com and am really impressed by the collective knowledge of most of your posts. I've seen some of your websites and I'm hoping you'll share some of that hard earned wisdom with me.

I have always loved monitors but never dared to purchase one knowing that all the species I had access to would quickly outgrow my ability to care for them. I recently learned about the dwarf monitors and I'm very excited! I can't wait to get started!

Currently I'm 1-2 months away from aquiring the right animal/s. I'd prefer to have all of the housing requirements met long before I purchase an animal, so your input will be very helpful indeed.

First off, I will be building a cage out of a kitchen cabinet I purchased from a hardware store for a good value. The cabinet is constructed of 1/2" laminated particle board with no raw surfaces on the inside. I plan on using 3/4" melamine to enclose the top and reinforce the back panel. The door is to be of the glass sliding type. The entire living space of this cage is 35" x 23 1/2" x 30."

Has anyone built a cage this way? I plan on using the mercury vapor bulb I found on the big apple herp. site for the basking area and a 24" flourescent fixture for the remainder of the lighting. Will I need an additional heat source? What would be the best(safest) choice?

About the monitor... I've seen many beautiful and interesting animals on endless web pages and classified adds. I'm used to working with desert species like bearded dragons and uromastyx, so if possible I'd like to stick to a species that lives in a similar environment. I'd also like an animal that tolerates handling well, if possible. Any and all suggestions as to species and reputable breeder are appreciated!

Eventually I would like to breed my monitors. How should one go about pairing them? Should I try for a trio, or is that asking for trouble? Also, should I house them together, or seperatly?

Thank you for your help and experience. Cheers
