Breeding

Widdy Feb 07, 2006 12:23 PM

I was under the impression that it took 3 years for a Male BCI to be ready to breed and 4 years for a female. Am I wrong? Maturity doesn't come with size it comes with age. Why are there sellers in the classified area saying that there are 04 and 05's that will be ready to breed this coming fall? If I am way out in left field, let me know.

Thanks

Its never a bad thing to wait. But most breeders can successfully breed a male at 18 month and a female at 2 1/2 years. Meening the female produces when she's 3 and the male is 2 yrs old. I personally waited an extra year with my girl but I know it possible for a girl to breed at 2 1/2 years without power feeding. I also read in Jeff Ronnes book that if you power feed a female some can produce at 2 years of age. I would definately not try this as it will shorten the life of your female. Good luck!

If I remember right Pete Kahl bred female hets at one year of age to make the first albino boas. I could be wrong but I remember reading this in one of his articles.
