Filters..new member..please help

Cooky Feb 07, 2006 01:54 PM

First I'd like to say hello to everyone. I'm a new member and also a "mother" to a RES I acquired as a rescue about a year and a half ago. He/she is about 5 yrs old and, believe it or not, this turtle was not much bigger than a hatchling when I got him. He was housed with 2 other tutles of the same age and they did not allow him to eat with them. Not knowing that much about turtles, I'm assuming his defense mechanisms kicked in and slowed down his metabolism so he barely grew, but he did survive. Naturally, I have a tremendous amount of respect for this little fighter. He is 5" across and 6" long now, and has outgrown 2 tanks, about to go into a 55 gal. that I was given. Eventually I want him in at least 100 gals. but for now this is the best I can do. He has also destroyed a "turtle" filter that was an unwise purchase. I'd like to get something I can stick with when he goes into the biggest tank. Have heard good things about fluvals and our pet store has one for that size tank. I was wondering about the bio-wheel type filters. The sales people in my local pet store are not very knowledgeable about turtle filters, and I want to make a sensible purchase. I'm sure this topic has been done to death, but I would really appreciate your input.
Thanks so much!

I’d recommend a canister filter. Which one all depends on what you want to spend. If you’re budget challenged get a FilStar XP3 or a Fluval 404. If you can afford it get an Eheim Pro II 2028. These will all be fine for a 55 gallon tank. For a 100 gallon tank you may need two. Remember, even if the filter is rated for a 100 gallon aquarium you should halve that for turtles. They are just so much dirtier than fish will ever be.

I have just brought a eheim 2026 (canister filter) and it's a very good filter i have a 30 gallon for a baby map and a baby yellow belly the filter is designed for 92 gals so works really well and keep the water ultra clean. i had a internal filter before which is cheaper and does a good job but i always got told the canister filters were the best so i gave it a try and i wont look back. Like rfb said basically get the biggest and best filer you can afford! It will be best for the long run!
Good luck
Andy
