Still have not seen them

smithicus Feb 07, 2006 06:01 PM

Purchased 2 Nigerian Uro's this saturday and they love the new cage i had ready for them. They did notice the underground tunnel system that I built for them and after exploring their new habitat they ventured into the tunnels and Dens i have for them. My question is how long will they stay in there? Its been 3 days and I have not seen them. I know they are becoming acclimated with their new enviornment but when should i be worried to the point were i have to check on them?

While the animals are becoming acclimated they should be kept in as simple cage as possible so that they can be moniyored on a daily basis, sort of a quarantine period. After you are sure they are healthy and are feeding regularly they can be moved to the more complicated permanent cage. Ok that said what is the temp of the burrow? That is very important. If it is only room temp, let's say 68-70 they may never come out. I noticed particularly with U. a. nigriventris that as a general rule they will not be active on a day when their burrow temps drop below 80 the previous night. I do not keep geyri but imagine they are pretty much the same as acanthinurus since they used to be a subspecies and come from pretty much the same type habitat. Also maybe they are just not warm enough period. What is the ambient temp of the cage and what are the temps of the basking sites?

Thanks for the reply! I have the temperature ranging from 115 in the basking area to 80 degrees and the temperature in the Dens drop to 74 degrees. Seems to hover around that temperature. Should i take them out and close off the tunnel system for the time being. I do have a above ground cave they can take to during the night.

i would get the temps up a little higher under the basking spot, more like the 120s and keep the background in the higher 80s

You can maybe raise the hide temp to about 80 and see what happens. If they still do not come after a week or so I would set them up in something a little simpler. It didn't sound like you were from your first message but I would not mess with them at all. Just offer food and let them be. Keep us posted and good luck. Tom
