Indigo's and Cribo's

rugha Feb 07, 2006 10:14 PM

I am becoming very very interested in Indigo's, both Texas and Eastern, and it's South American cousin, the Yellow Tailed Cribo.

I have two questions. Which get larger? And how difficult is it to obtain a permit to own an Eastern? I live in Va.

Thanks!

YT Cribos are the largest of the Dry genus, with Eastern Indigos normally getting only slightly larger than Texans.
You may wish to take a peek at the indigosnakes.com site, www.indigosnakes.com, as there is at least one breeder located in Virginia.
As for permits, I believe you will only require interstate commerce permits, should you purchase an Eastern Indigo from an out of state source. And as many have indicated to such questions before, review the breeders list on teh site indicated and contact several of them, as you will certainly find most have waiting lists already...

Good luck,

Jeff

Good luck with the search. I'd definitely reccommend finding a breeder in state if you are able since the interstate commerce permits are running a cool $100 now in addition to the price of snakes and shipping. The good news is that Texans and the various species of cribos do not require said permits...
If you've never had one before, I'd also recommend looking into Black tailed cribos (sometimes referred to as CA indigos). They're every bit as cool in my opinion at about 20% the price of an Eastern or Texan.

To add to what has been said I believe that Virginia has own state permit requirement for keeping any snake with federal staus as threatened or endangered. If this is so it would include Eastern indigo.
