Sick Uro???

dewkitty Feb 07, 2006 10:26 PM

I have an 11 year old Egyptian. Normal in every way, eating ect..
Today I notice a large glob of blood where he deficated. Looked like red pudding/jelly (clots?) about a heaping teaspoon worth, almost looks like internal organs.
He did not eat today. His diet is the same as always mustard greens, snow peas, bok choy, collard greens and carrots.

He normally is on birdseed subtrate but I changed about 5 months ago to a sand like one. Grainy, sorry I cant remember what.. its not walnut. Its possible my husband didnt chop up the carrots small enough and maybe thats the problem??

Have any of you seen this before???? I can take him to the vet but would like to hear from you as they are not open yet.
Thanks!

PS: He is walking around, doent seem to be in any pain.

Is this a male? Sounds very much like a hemipenial prolaspe.

I would not know for sure without seeing, but from your description , I would think so. If it is, it's an emergency I will say first you should get to a vet. (Have to say that)

Next I will say what I did when it happened to my chuckwalla at night on a weekend, could not get a Vet, had to act fast. Remembered reading what to do.

Filled the bathroom sink with coolish water and you add sugar to the water. Put his back end in the sink or whatever you use and soak it. Try and hold him there for awhile. You want that organ to shrink and go back into it's normal position, and NOT be hanging out. COOL water.

Next DO NOT put him back into his tank with sand or anything dirty, keep that area CLEAN and moist. I used a slightly damp but clean bath towel in the tank.

This is super important, if you do not have any get some KY JELLY buy it in a drugstore, supermarket.... and squirt it all over his vent area, everywhere in that area.
And place him on the clean towel, I squirted more on every few hours and thank God, by morning it had gone back in and he was fine.

You do NOT want to let it dry out, KY-jelly will keep it moist and hopfully it will shrink and go back in. If not call your Vet.

Hope he will be fine. Like I say I can not see him so I can not be sure, it just sounds like a prolaspe and I figure if it is this may help, since I dealt with one.

Oh I'm sorry I didnt explain right..
Its not still on him. His vent is fine. Its was left in the cage when he deficated. A blob was next to his sleeping area. His body looks good. Its just what he deposited thats scary.

Thanks for that info though!! I will save it.. Just incase that ever happens.

blood/ clots you should call your vet. He may have parasites, they will probably do a fecal and check him.

In any case seeing that, is a warning of something NOT right.
Sorry I misunderstood your post, yeah give your vet a call as soon as ya can.

Hope he will be okay, keep us updated!

Thanks, Parasites will do that? I will take him to the vet. I will also change his subtrate back to birdseed.. it did him well for many years.

One more question.. does anyone know the average lifespan of a Uro? My guy is about 11 or 12.

Is he thermo regulating? (is that the term?).
Is this because he's not feeling well? Or the temperatures?

head bobbing is mating or aggressive behavior.
i have read that uros live 10 to 15 years, but there is speculation that they will live longer in captivity.

Thats good he was treated, yeah, blood is usually the sign of parasites/worms.

He should be fine
