Feb 08, 2006 07:09 AM

THE ADVERTISER (Adelaide, Australia) 08 February 06 Snakebite man's fight for life
A father of eight is in the intensive care unit of the Royal Adelaide Hospital after being bitten by a brown snake on Sunday.
The man, 43, from Renmark, was using a stick to remove the 30cm snake from a road when he was bitten twice on the finger.
The victim then went home, but collapsed a short time later. Paramedics revived him.
He was airlifted from Renmark and Berri Hospital to Royal Adelaide Hospital.
The man's fiancee is keeping a bedside vigil.
The eastern brown snake is among the deadliest in the world.

For once, we have someone trying to do a good deed, and then what does he get for it! At least they pointed out that he was trying to remove it from the road, instead of trying to pretend he was Steve Irwin.

what is with those things? First a nice ol' grandma, now a man trying to do a good deed? Where is a news reporter or elected official, or Austin Stevens ( you know, someone who deserves it when you need them?!?.

perhaps we should ask the media to cover more when Austin Stevens or Steve Irwin get nabbed!

I was unaware that Irwin had ever been bitten by a venemous snake. Comparing him to A.S. is probably about as accurate as comparing him to Mr. Bredl.

goini04 Feb 09, 2006 11:38 AM

I was referring to the stupid stunts that Irwin pulls. He is a prime example of what NOT to do in my opinion. I at no point compared the two.

It sure seemed you were lumping them together when you talked about press coverage when they get bit. (Please enlighten me as to Irwin was envenomated....I did miss that one.)

Now you talk about "crazy" Irwin's reckless techniques? But hey, you aren't comparing the two...lol...are you a part-time lawyer?

Don't get me wrong...the guy's on screen performances remind me of Capt. Kirk in the old star treks...definitely hammy and over the top. They also seem to work the old camera angles to make things "scarier".

It just seems you really dislike the guy and it's perhaps warping your view?

bps516 Feb 09, 2006 03:01 PM

Warped view... that is what you would expect a trekkie to say (along with a reference to Kirk- not saying you are a treckie... just making a comparison between the two), LOL...

I don't think that anyone would argue that the acting skills of both Steve Irwan and William Shatner (see, Star Trek is a tv show, some people don't realize that there was an actor playing the role of Capt. Kirk... it isn't real) leave a lot to be desired but he wasn't comparing them, just the stunts.

Example- what sain or semi-sain person would go out into a group of great white sharks in a small row boat with their wife and dog? Stupid TV stunt... would AS ever do that? No, he pulls other stupid TV stunts.

Actually, Irwin does do a lot of good, although I still liked it when South Park used him to check a guy's sex... He's over the top, but still does good work. Stevens? Nice music, good photography... idiot for a host. Deserves to be bitten or eaten by a large reptile.

Psssst in that episode they were filming from a much larger adjacent vessel and frankly it wasn't all that scary looking.
(To my point about camera tricks) Tiger sharks and great whites are not notorious for attacking and sinking boats....you've been watching Jaws III on HBO?

Heck, I've seen science shows with researchers in just as small runabouts (some inflatable) around great whites.

I guess my bottom line is that Irwin is just overacted stuff fluffed up to look ****scary*****. The guy has done this stuff for a long time and never suffered any real injury etc. so I think he's fooling some people.

bps516 Feb 10, 2006 09:18 AM

Hey now! Jaws III sucked! I get my information from Jaws 4! LOL! No I know they won't (normally, I won't say never though I have yet to hear about one) sink a boat but thumping it or having a dog bouncing it along with having it bumped by sharks is just an all around bad idea. Sorry I am in the Southern US and the phrase "Hey ya'll watch this!" just comes to mind when I watch that episode. As for the fact that there was a bigger boat adjacent to them, you really pay attention do details, I am impressed!

I do notice though that no one came to the defense of the news reporter or elected official in my comment... Hmmmm... LOL!

It appears that the man has lost his life as a result of the incident. Very unfortunate!

If the information his daughter stated was true, and it probably is (unless the press screwed up her quote), he probably could have been saved had he sought medical attention immediately...according to her, emergency services were only summoned after he went home and collapsed.

However, being that the man was probably relatively ignorant to proper snakebite treatment, and was trying to help the snake as opposed to harassing it, this is an unfortunate tragedy and my thoughts are with his family in their time of mourning.
