I never used it, but straw or hay was recommended to me by my herp vet but he was talking about the big bales you can get at feed and grain type stores. I thought it would be terribly messy and never tried it.
If you try it, let us know how it works out.

it is messy.....and dusty at times.I used the big bales right from the farm..the stuff at a supermarket would be cleaner yet 100 times more expensive.......I used to get straw at $2 a bale...even $1.50.....then up to $5.......
without the care of cost..yes you could use it..but it will make a mess.......ok.....you can clean
it is really not that absorbant....the urates and fecal matter will run right through it to the bottom of the tank/tub.....and make a mess ......
and you will find more weeds then just the timothy grass or wheat straw or oat straw (etc)....you will find all kinds of weeds that may not be to your liking..they won't hurt the snake...except weeds with briars and brambles and maybe stinging nettle.......hhhmmm......
.....aspen or cypress would be much better......and just as messy and dusty........LOL
.........Lowe's...$2.99 40 pound bag.......cypress...

are they really?.....wow
that's what I want.
Not!
Aspen is bad enough, the stuff sticks on my sweaters and ends up being drug all through the house by my "helpers" (nosy dog and cats).

paper........you have no mess and clean fast ..just change paper.......kewl.......
well......the mess goes under the paper and get smeared all over the paper and all over the cage.....so.you have to actually wash the cage more often with water.......hmmm.......I hate that
cypress (or whatever.)..the mess hides and is soaked up better so you actually have to clean and wash less....but you have dust and chips all over the floor....
..either way......a mess.........
........only good clean method.......taks with cypress and silk plants and fake water in a bowl and logs then add a plastic snake and frogs and lizards or even real stuffed critters?....(taxidermy).......LOL
........I had a 30 high tank once setup with live plants and all and added plastic dart frogs....just move them around all the time........people actually thought I had real frogs for awhile..(till I opened my big mouth)......
........have fun.......get a new dustbuster for each room.......

Hi, well i am trying straw so thought i'd let you know how its going - firstly you get lots for your money i bought a 2kg bag and have covered 5 3ft tanks and have bearly broke the surface. the clean stuff from the supermarket. it is a little messy putting it in, and at first it looks a bit untidy but once the snakes have had an explore and made a few paths it looks fine and they seem to like it and have burrowed into it making some sork of nest. it doesnt absorbed matter but just lifting it becomes very clear were the mess is and which areas need to be changed! ok thats it so for but i reckon a thumbs up all in all - if for no other reason than the amount you get for a couple of dollars.
