Spiny tail iggy

idothatforme Feb 08, 2006 08:59 AM

What are my chances of taming an adult spiny tail iggy? there is a nice looking spiny at a local petshot thats about 30 inches long. hes got quite a temper... but i feel bad because hes in an enclosure with 3 other green iggys. hes sellin it for $40. does that sound like a good price? i have a tank with the dimensions of a 40 breeder that is 3 feet high and with a side door. i currently have 2 nile monitors so im not worried about the agression. my niles calmed down quite a bit with regular handling and minimal eye contact, im geussing this lizard will do the same...?

There will definately be minimal eye contact ;O) Just kidding.
Not a lizard I would worry about taming. Set him up and let him be himself if you want to help him out. Trying to tame him would likely lead to undue stress...not that sharing a cage with Green iguanas is any less stressful.

I have three that I got as hatchlings and Ive had them for a couple months now and they are becoming quite tame. They stopped trying to bite me after the first week or two and although they dont like to be piked up, they settle down quickly. They will even take food from your hand while you hold them and are actually quite calm once they get over the initial shock of being picked up. Ive heard alot of horror storys about the ferocity of these lizards, but in reality anyone who is patient and invests the time can tame them into a very docile pet. They are extremely intelligent and make for a challenging captive but are worth the effort.
