Why do ovulating females curl in perfect coils?

bpconnection Feb 08, 2006 09:42 AM

I've read different place that talk about what females do when they ovulate, have observed it all in my females, but haven't heard a reason for WHY they coil up (I'm not referring to coiling around the water dish, fyi)...other behaviors make sense, though.

Well - actually they don't perfect coil when they ovulate (at least mine haven't) - mostly I've been able to catch mine because they will lay stretched out across their tubs before and during ovulation - then when they are done they will go coil over the heat until eggs. I would suppose this would have something to do with keeping the eggs developing inside of them warm and just being in a comfortable low engergy postion. Also given that their balling is defensive position this coil may be a way they keep the developing eggs safe from natural pretators. Then again there could be no reason what so ever for it. But it would make sence that it would have something to do with heat and the eggs inside of them.

I hatched two clutches for myself last year...and i have a good feeling about getting at least 4 more so far this season...but i have yet to actually catch an ovulation! lol
...if it were not for that coil action they do...i would be clueless at this point.

It's my guess that they may be caring for them in ways we aren't aware of yet.Perhaps they are thermoregulating them already, much in the same way they do after they lay them.Hence the coil action?(Sometimes appears as if they have eggs underneath them already doesn't it?)

I'm there with you right now...I didn't catch either of my females ovulating so far this year. I caught the lying on their back and then the coiling...

I have 3 more, and I'm hoping to catch one of them at least! Good luck!
