I have a differnent question on thermostats

tsusnakeguy Feb 08, 2006 11:12 AM

Right now I use the cheap 40 dollar thermostat you can get from places like Big Apple and some pet stores. Later on once I get more money and start doing some breeding I want to upgrade my thermostats and other things. I was wondering what do all these high price thermostats do tht my little 40 dollar one doesnt do. I mean are some of these making coffee and doing the laudry while they control temperatures. I am wondering if someone makes one that can be hooked into 2 or 3 different cages and control each of those cages independntly of the others. Just basically what is the best one for its money and what is the cheapest one also that can do the same job. I know there is a post lower that talks about thermostats but where is a good place to check some of these out. I find descriptions on some of these things but I never know what they are talking about I would love some other information on them.
Thank you

The difference in the thermostats your talking about is the relay and the differential. In the cheaper thermostats they of course use cheaper components to build the stat. The differential is where you can adjust the amount of degree the thermostat will go below or above the actual set point. Most of the cheaper models have a dif of about 3-7 degrees.. Others in the analog type can be adjusted to one degree.. Then there is proportional that only send the exact amount of current to the heating element that is needed to keep the temps where they need to be rather then turning the power completly on or off.. Hope this helps,

Thanks for the advice that clears up some confusion but are there some with multiple probes that could work for multiple cages?

You can use a single probed thermostat to run several cages as long as they need the same temps, are the same size and have the same heating element as long as you do not go over the wattage limitations of the themrostat. There are proportional stats that have multiple probes like the herpstat 2 and the HCS.. These are more expensive of course as they are basically multiple stat in one

I noticed on MGReptiles.com there is a Hab Control Module for $299 that supports 4 different "Zones" It also appears to be analog. The manual is available. Its called the "Habitate Control System" I am seriously thinking about getting it as it would cover all but one of my snakes. It seems to have every feature available including room service.
