Display Snakes

Kiknskreem Feb 08, 2006 02:10 PM

I'm just about finished a nice 4 level display case and am looking for some good snakes to fill it with. Each enclosure is 32x11x14h. I'd like an active, eye grabbing snake since they are for display. If they are semi-arboreal all the better. Any reccomendations, open to non-rat snakes as well?

I recomend a black rat. That cage may be a little small for an adult though. They are very active and semi arboreal and with all of the morphs popping up they can get pretty flashy.

Since I'm mostly an Asian rat breeder, I'd recommend a Japanese rat snake (E. climacaphora). They are semi-arboreal, won't outgrow that size of cage, and don't require a lot of special care. They can be handled easily, if you choose, or will be good just for display. This is a pic of a sub-adult female.

I'm a big fan of constrictors but for a North American display snake, I'd have to recommend garters. There are some absolutely awesome looking varieties out there. Garters are diurnal (up at day time). They are very alert and usually looking around at what is going on outside their enclosure. Most of mine will hand feed. My black rats show themselves well too, as do my eastern fox snakes.

They are hard to beat for display snakes - diurnal and love the trees. One of my hypos frequently sleeps in the tree. Here is a an old pic of a group of youngsters.

For looks, I don't think you can go wrong with a classic wild type Corn Snake. Many of the Milk Snakes have good coloring for display.

The main problen with most snakes is that they like to hide. You can have a great display with a snake with jaw dropping good looks, and most of the time, that snake will be in its hide. Hiding is so much a part of their nature that many snakes will fail to thrive because of stress caused by their feeling unsafe due to exposure. You just have to provide them with a hide, there is no getting around it.

Let us know what snakes you go with.

I love the coloring of your snake. Is that a black rat?

They're beautiful, big, and VERY active. Every one I have owned has been extremely active, always looking out into the room. Definitely some of the best candidates for display snakes out there.
