How much can a boa soak before its unhealthy?

cee4 Feb 08, 2006 03:59 PM

Before christmas I had a bout of mites but have since seemed to have gotten rid of them..But she is still soaking..I change her water bowl every other day and there are no mites in the water..So why is she still soaking, isnt she going to get some problems from this, its been weeks now....Im tempted to take out her big dish and replace it with something much smaller..Any ideas?

Thanks Cece

your humidity may be too low witch will cause a boa to soak or it may be dehydrated.

She hasnt shed at all since our mite episode. And last night I was looking at her and her belly is really pink so Im thinking she might be ready to shed, though I never saw her eyes get blue at all..I will raise the humidity with another water bowl(Im using newspaper now and it is dry here though her water bowl is really big)

....in your waterbowl, i would switch to a smaller bowl, that she cant get in. i have maintained and bred snakes without letting them "soak" in bowls for years. if i see them going into shed i mist the enclosure a bit. i do not use hide boxes but you might try that to see if she uses it instead of the waterbowl. i doubt that in the wild snakes lie around in water holes. could be wrong but it would seem like a good place to get eaten. j yocum
