How about a Corn Snake or Milk Snake? Kingsnakes are good too. Corn snakes are a species of Red Ratsnake, and I recommend any ratsnake. I want to get a Trans-Pecos Ratsnake. they're really cute and very very tame. If you want a bigger snake, then Ball Pythons or Colombian Red-tailed Boas are nice too, but ball pythons can be tricky to feed when you first bring them home. Garter snakes and Water snakes aren't too friendly. my garter snakes bite me more than all my snakes combined!! But, check out some of those snakes I listed above. Hope this helps

the key to getting any snake is research! make sure to have adiquite living conditions for the snake or else you will end up with a very sad child when his/her pet dies. i wouldn't suggest ball pythons because even captive-bred ones are picky eaters. i also wouldnt suggest a garter because of their unpredictability(ok they are very predictable, they either bite or musk when you touch them). maybe try to talk him/her into getting something a bit easier to care for like a leopard gecko. they are easily housed in a 10 gallon aquarium, only cost about $20, and a pretty forgiving if you make mistakes in their care, plus they hardly ever bite. idk if you are squeemish about mice but basically any snake must be fed these(if you are lucky you can find a breeder who starts the snakes on frozen so you never have to deal with live ones). if your kid still wants a snake try a corn snake(about $20) or even a rat snake($30 or so depending on what color/species you get). good luck with your decision!

I can personaly vouch for a California King Snake. I have had several of these and have yet to recive a bite. I have one now I am nersing back to helth that got run over by a coworker about a week ago on his way home. Its amazing what these snakes can put up with. I would also agree with the formentioned a lot of people end up tossing there herps after finding out what they eat or how big they grow. A 6 foot Iguana was just turned into a local pet store the other day it was found wondering an apartment complex in an area that gets a bit of snow every year. Apon further investigation it was uncoverd the owner had no idea the lizard would get that big so they let it go. Mice can be a real pain especialy if you breed your own such as I do. Please do a lot of research on this snakes arnt for everyone and there is nothing sader than a snake without a home.

i agree with all the above research fist then when the time comes go for something easy the corn snake seems to be the ultimate starter........
