How long uninterrupted hibernation?

guanabanaboy Feb 09, 2006 09:50 AM

Well, in a previous post, some helpful people on this forum cleared up my question about our young Desert Horned Lizard and whether or not she was indeed hibernating (1st time). Initially, there were intermittent periods where she surfaced but really didn't eat. Now, she's been underground for 6 weeks. I did dig her up in early January. She woke up, but I turned my back for a minute, and she buried herself again. My question is whether or not I should dig her up again to check to make sure she's ok and give her some water. Just a little worried she might get dehydrated since there's no natural rainfall in the terrarium. Also, when should I expect her to surface again? I have to be ready with the ants, which I order by mail. I would expect her to be very hungry after the long nap. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

I know some people who wake the HLs once a month to offer water without any negative effects. They go back down and continue with brumation without interuption.

I usually just spray down the terrarium once a month to simulate rain. They still drink even though they're buried. When you have many specimens it would be difficult to locate and dig them all up.

DHLs become active in March through April here in southern CA.
